Chromatic aberration, also known as color fringing, is a phenomenon that occurs in optics due to the difference of dispersion and refractive indexes of the glass specific materials used and the properties of the various wavelengths transmitting through glass.
As white light passes through glass, each wavelength that comprises of this light is separated and focused at different points on a plane. Achromatic lenses use glass materials of different dispersion to compensate for this chromatic aberration and refocus the individual wavelengths of light to a common focal point.
These lenses are flexible in design, and they come in a wide array of configurations that can account for the level of correction required by the application. Achromatic lenses, such as doublets and triplets, not only correct for chromatic aberration but they can also reduce spherical aberration in some instances by introducing aspheric properties. For these reasons, Achromatic lenses are commonly used in life science imaging, surface inspection and spectroscopy applications.
